Mitsotakis’ statement cast a shadow over the normalization process in Turkish-Greek relations
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ remark about on becoming “Turkish hunters” casts doubt on the normalization of Turkish-Greek relations, highlighting tensions despite commitments to peace
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made statements that have cast a shadow on the normalization era in Turkish-Greek relations.
During his visit to Türkiye on May 13 and his meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Mitsotakis made the controversial remark that “we could become Turkish hunters”, despite previously affirming their commitment to ensuring lasting peace between the two countries.
“It is very easy to raise our voices, to inflame public opinion, to captivate the crowds, but we must face the consequences,” Mitsotakis stated, highlighting that provocative policies have repercussions.
The Greek Prime Minister reiterated his country’s commitment to peace while also asserting Greece’s superiority in terms of defense capabilities compared to Türkiye
Despite ongoing efforts to normalize Turkish-Greek relations, Greece continues to arm the Aegean islands, a move that contradicts the Treaty of Lausanne.
Furthermore, Greece is bolstering its military arsenal against Türkiye by acquiring aircraft from countries such as Germany and France.
Additionally, Greece is allowing the U.S. to enhance its military presence in Alexandroupoli, located near the Turkish border.
These developments significantly undermine the ongoing normalization process in Turkish-Greek relations. Mitsotakis’ use of threatening undertones contradicts his professed desire for peace, exacerbating tensions between the two nations.
