Indonesia has entered a new phase in its strategic defense partnership with Türkiye by signing a joint production agreement with Baykar, a leading Turkish defense technology company, for the procurement of unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs).

Under the deal, Indonesia will reportedly acquire 60 sets of Bayraktar TB3 and nine sets of Bayraktar Akinci, according to Indonesian media outlet JawaPos‘ report.

Strengthening defense ties between Indonesia and Türkiye

The partnership is backed by Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense and Türkiye’s Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB).

It was also attended by Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and SSB head Haluk Gorgun, marking a significant step in advancing bilateral defense cooperation.

The agreement includes the establishment of a joint venture company (JVC) focused on the production, assembly, and maintenance of UAVs in Indonesia.

This initiative aims to boost Indonesia’s aerospace sector and defense capabilities through the localization of UAV production.

Procurement and localization of Bayraktar TB3 and Akinci

Bayraktar TB3, currently in the testing phase, is an upgraded, shipborne version of the widely used TB2. It is designed to operate from short runways and aircraft carriers, enhancing Indonesia’s maritime defense capabilities.

The Akinci, a high-altitude, long-endurance (HALE) UCAV, offers advanced payload capabilities and an extensive range of weapon integration, making it a versatile asset for Indonesia’s military.

Baykar, a global leader in UAV technology, will contribute its expertise in manufacturing, technology transfer, and training. Republikorp, led by Chairman Norman Joesoef, will oversee regulatory compliance, infrastructure development, and the certification of local specialists.

According to reports, the agreement specifies that one UAV system, at least the Bayraktar TB2 for the Polish Armed Forces included four UAVs, ground support, and control components. However, The Aviationist page claims a single set of Bayraktar TB2 UAVs, in its Polish configuration, is made out of six TB2 UAVs, three ground control stations electro-optic infrared (EO/IR) sensors, weapons and spares.

This might mean if the set numbers are same as TB2, Indonesia will procure approximately at least 240 Bayraktar TB3 UAVs and 36 Bayraktar Akinci UCAVs, significantly boosting its aerial defense capabilities.
