In a recent revelation that has captured global attention, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III, aged 74, has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. This announcement came after initial statements in January about the king undergoing a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate, which later culminated in a three-night hospital stay.

Speculation about a possible regency, where the Prince of Wales William could be appointed to take over the king’s duties, has been a topic of conversation. However, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has suggested that such a measure is unlikely at this stage, given that the cancer was reportedly caught early.

The concept of a regency in the U.K. allows for the delegation of royal powers and duties to the Prince of Wales without the monarch abdicating. This means that Prince William could perform royal functions on behalf of his father, King Charles, who would remain the sovereign head of state. 

The Regency Act of 1937 outlines the conditions under which a regency can be established.

King Charles III ascended to the throne following Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September 2022 and was crowned in May 2023, marking the first coronation in nearly seven decades. His reign has been characterized by a commitment to continuity and public service, underlined by his decision to share his health struggles openly.
