The European Commission has taken legal action against Hungary’s controversial “sovereignty law,” initiated by Prime Minister Viktor Orban

The European Commission initiated legal proceedings against Hungary’s controversial “sovereignty law,” which Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s ruling Fidesz party claimed was essential to shield Budapest from foreign political interference.

On Wednesday, the European Commission issued Hungary a formal notice, signaling the start of an infringement procedure over the law, alleging violations of the EU’s democratic values and fundamental rights.

The “sovereignty law” establishes the “Office for the Defence of Sovereignty,” tasked with collecting information on individuals or groups receiving foreign funding perceived to influence the country’s political debate and electoral processes.

Orban’s Fidesz party argues that the law aims to combat “electoral trickery,” alleging that opposition parties received funds from a U.S.-based nongovernmental organization in the 2022 elections.
