The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change announced a comprehensive set of measures through its Directorate of Climate Change aimed at significantly reducing the country’s environmental impact.
The ban on the import of ozone-depleting substances starting in 2025 marks a major step in Türkiye’s environmental policy.
The directive is part of a strategic plan that outlines the country’s climate change strategies over the next five years. This plan includes the development of a robust monitoring mechanism to track the progress of various environmental initiatives and the gradual phase-out of ozone-depleting substances’ import and use.
Türkiye is also set to enhance its climate change research, including the development of a national climate model and the creation of climate hazard maps.
These efforts aim to improve the sharing and coordination of climate-related studies both on a national and regional level.
Besides, the establishment of an Emission Trading System (ETS) and the development of infrastructure for a voluntary carbon market and national offsetting initiatives are underway, with legislation to support these efforts expected to be rolled out by 2028.
Hub for investments
As a developing country with high mitigation potential and a long track record of successful climate change projects, Türkiye continues to be an attractive destination for climate change investments.
To combat climate change more effectively, Türkiye plans to increase its climate financing capacity and establish incentives for innovation and technological advancements in green transformation across various sectors.
The National Green Taxonomy and the National Climate Financing Strategy drafts are scheduled for completion by 2026.
The Turkish Climate Change Presidency has set ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These targets include a 3-point increase to 32% in reduced emissions this year, with gradual increases planned for the coming years, culminating in a 39% reduction by the strategic plan’s conclusion in 2028.
These initiatives underscore Türkiye’s commitment to addressing climate change and transitioning toward a more sustainable and environmentally friendly economy.
