UEFA mulls moving to penalties instead of extra time in Champions League knockout rounds

UEFA is reportedly considering scrapping extra time in club competitions, sending knockout ties straight to penalties, according to the Guardian’s report.
The proposal aims to ease fixture congestion, especially with the expanded Champions League and Club World Cup. While a change before 2027 is unlikely, discussions are gaining momentum.

Players’ unions argue that removing extra time would reduce player workload, while clubs facing long qualifying rounds may also benefit.
Broadcasters could support the shift, as it minimizes scheduling risks and enhances the drama of penalty shootouts. Underdog teams might see it as a fairer system, preventing fatigue from benefiting bigger clubs with deeper squads.
Extra time has been rare in recent years, with only three Champions League ties needing it since 2022.
Domestic competitions have already adjusted to fixture congestion, such as England’s FA Cup replays being scrapped. UEFA says discussions remain informal, and any change would require executive committee approval.
