Sumela Monastery and Altindere Valley transform into winter wonderland
Sumela Monastery, one of the world’s most famous religious and historical sites, and the picturesque Altindere Valley have been blanketed in white after recent snowfall, offering visitors a mesmerizing winter scene.
Snowfall began in the high-altitude regions of Trabzon’s Macka district last night and continued intermittently, covering Altindere Valley and its surroundings in a pristine layer of snow.
Perched on the cliffs of Karadag, approximately 300 meters above the valley, Sumela Monastery—also known as “Meryem Ana” among locals—now presents a stunning contrast against the wintry landscape.
Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, the historic monastery and its valley have turned into a breathtaking sight, attracting both domestic and international visitors eager to witness its enchanting winter scenery.
Nature’s winter masterpiece
The surrounding trees, flowing springs, and parts of the valley’s stream have all been coated in snow, further enhancing the region’s ethereal beauty. Sumela Monastery and Altindere Valley, renowned for their year-round charm, were also captured in stunning aerial footage, showcasing the magnificence of the winter wonderland.

Osman Onder, a visitor from Samsun, shared his admiration for the site with Anadolu Agency reporters, emphasizing the magical touch that snow brings to the monastery and its surroundings.
“The snowfall has added a different atmosphere. While summer offers the best conditions for photography, winter has its own unique aura,” he noted.
Encouraging others to visit, Onder added, “Those who have the chance should definitely come and see it. This place is absolutely stunning, even in winter.”
With its snow-draped landscapes and serene ambiance, Sumela Monastery continues to be an unmissable destination, captivating visitors with its historical and natural splendor in every season.
