Putin, Xi emphasize ‘stronger coordination’ in a call
Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin pledge to strengthen ties and safeguard sovereignty amid Western pressures during a call
Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized deepening cooperation with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during a call on Thursday, signaling continued efforts to bolster their alliance amid tensions with Western powers.
According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Xi stressed the importance of “enhancing strategic coordination” and protecting their countries’ sovereignty, security and development interests. He also underlined the need to reject external interference in internal affairs, hinting at shared concerns over Western government activities.
The call, occurring ahead of China’s Lunar New Year, marks another instance of robust communication between the two leaders, known for their close personal rapport and shared ambition to counter what they perceive as U.S. dominance in global affairs.
Their growing partnership has drawn scrutiny from Western governments, especially amid fears that China might offer support to Putin’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The leaders engaged in an in-depth discussion concerning various regions, including the Middle East, and deliberated on the ongoing situation in Ukraine, according to a statement released by the Kremlin.
Regarding the Middle East, the Kremlin highlighted that both Russia and China advocate for a political and diplomatic resolution to the Palestinian issue, in accordance with established international legal frameworks.
The leaders also congratulated each other on the hailed record trade, which last year exceeded a target of $200 billion ahead of schedule.
