Mass grave linked to Khojaly Massacre discovered in Karabakh, Azerbaijan
In Askeran province of Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region, a mass grave containing bodies presumed to belong to the victims of the Khojaly Massacre was found
A mass grave containing the bodies of eight people was found during excavations in Askeran province upon the testimony of Rashid Beglaryan, who was detained on suspicion of being one of the perpetrators of the Khojaly Massacre during Azerbaijan’s counterterrorism operation in Karabakh in September 2023.
In the statement made by the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons of Azerbaijan, it was stated that Rashid Beglaryan confessed in his statement that on Feb. 26, 1992, the gang he was a member of ambushed and massacred about 200 Azerbaijani civilians near Askeran Castle and buried some bodies there.
Excavation work in the area where the massacre occurred remains ongoing.
