Trump expresses support for Russia targeting NATO allies
White House characterizes the statements of the former president and anticipated 2024 Republican candidate as erratic
Former President and expected 2024 Republican nominee, Donald Trump, asserted his willingness to support Russia in targeting NATO allies he deems financially delinquent during a campaign rally in Conway, South Carolina, ahead of the state’s Republican presidential preference primary on Feb. 24.
The White House condemned Trump’s remarks as “appalling and unhinged,” emphasizing the risks they pose to national security and global stability.
Trump’s statements reflect his longstanding skepticism toward NATO and reluctance to aid Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s invasion, which began in February 2022.
He reiterated his stance that countries failing to meet NATO’s defense spending target should not expect U.S. protection.
Trump’s remarks drew criticism from political commentators, with some suggesting they could be interpreted as encouraging Russia to attack NATO allies.
Conversely, conservative voices viewed his comments favorably, seeing them as aligning with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s interests.
Additionally, Trump celebrated the collapse of congressional efforts to address the U.S.-Mexico border migration crisis, pledging to implement extensive deportation measures if re-elected.
Despite his strong performance in opinion polls against Democratic incumbent Joe Biden, Trump faces over 90 criminal charges across multiple jurisdictions, including allegations of election interference, mishandling of government secrets, and illicit payments.
He maintains his innocence in all cases.
