Istanbul will see its first snowfall of 2025 as a strong cold front moves in next week. Meteorologists warn that after an unusually warm January, temperatures will drop sharply, bringing snow to parts of the city and surrounding areas.

Cold weather from Balkans expected to bring snowfall to Istanbul

Experts predict that Istanbul and several other regions in Türkiye will experience colder weather starting Feb. 4.

Professor Orhan Sen told CNN, “The western regions have been experiencing an unusually warm winter, but this will end soon. Snow will fall in eastern parts of Istanbul, and a stronger cold front will follow on February 7, bringing even lower temperatures through February 11.”

The Meteorology General Directorate (MGM) confirmed that a cold front from the Balkans will hit the region. Snowfall will begin in Trakya, particularly in Kirklareli and Edirne, over the weekend before reaching Istanbul.

“By February 5, snow will be more widespread. Temperatures will drop by around 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit),” experts warned.

Istanbul residents should prepare for icy roads, possible disruptions

Experts warn that snowfall may be intense in some areas, especially in eastern Istanbul and higher elevations. The Marmara region, including Istanbul, will likely see significant snow accumulation. Snowfall will also affect the Black Sea, Central Anatolia, and parts of Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia.

The Istanbul Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) urged residents to prepare for icy road conditions. “As temperatures drop at night, roads may become hazardous,” AKOM officials stated. Drivers and pedestrians should remain cautious, especially in the early morning and late evening hours.

Heavy snowfall could disrupt travel, daily life in Istanbul

Meteorologists warned that heavy snowfall could impact transportation and road conditions. The Meteorology General Directorate emphasized that traffic congestion and delays are likely. “Drivers should check weather updates and prepare for difficult travel conditions,” officials advised.

Weather models indicate that temperatures in Istanbul will stay below seasonal averages until mid-February. After Feb. 11, conditions may gradually return to normal.

Authorities recommend that residents prepare for winter conditions, stock up on necessary supplies, and follow official updates for possible changes in forecasts.
