Authorities in Sweden report a fire at an amusement park in the western city of Gothenburg

A fire erupted on Monday at the Oceana water park, under construction at Liseberg Park, one of Scandinavia’s largest amusement parks in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The incident sent a massive plume of black smoke into the sky and led to the evacuation of nearby facilities, including a hotel and office buildings.

The blaze affected several yet-to-be-opened waterslides, including one with a 13-meter (42.65-foot) drop. Twelve people were sent to the hospital for minor injuries, and one person is currently missing. The cause of the fire is under investigation as a “workplace accident.”

At least three explosions occurred during the fire, sending debris from buildings scattered over the burning waterslides.

The authorities urged people in the affected area to stay indoors, close doors, windows, and ventilation, and listen to the local radio due to the thick smoke billowing from the fire.

Liseberg Park, located in downtown Gothenburg, has been a popular tourist destination since its opening in 1923, attracting around 3 million visitors annually. The park features various rides, attractions, and entertainment options. The addition of the Oceana Water Park was anticipated to enhance the park’s offerings and draw even more visitors.
