Russia declares Estonian PM Kaja Kallas ‘wanted’
Russia declares Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas as ‘wanted’ on unspecified criminal charges, further straining diplomatic relations between Moscow and its Baltic neighbors
Russia has issued criminal charges against Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, declaring her “wanted” Tuesday.
The reasons behind this charge remain undisclosed.
Estonia’s leader, who has been in office since 2021, appeared on the Russian interior ministry’s database of wanted individuals under unspecified charges according to the Criminal Code, accompanied by her image.
There has been no immediate response from Estonia regarding this development.
Tensions between Moscow and Estonia, an EU member with a significant Russian minority population, have persisted since the end of the Cold War.
The removal of Soviet-era war monuments by Tallinn, considered by the Estonian government as symbols of Soviet occupation, has been a particular point of contention.
This latest action follows Moscow’s summoning of diplomats from Estonia and its two other Baltic neighbors earlier in February, alleging their involvement in attempting to “sabotage” Russia’s upcoming presidential election.
