Zuckerberg slams Apple’s Vision Pro, touting Meta Quest 3 as better headset
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO, expresses his views on the Apple Vision Pro
Apple Vision Pro made its debut earlier in February to generally positive reviews, marking Apple’s entry into the mixed reality headset arena. Reviewers have mostly praised the device, albeit with some reservations. Its primary competitor, the Meta Quest 3, is the only major contender in this space. Today, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared his perspective on the Apple Vision Pro, and it’s safe to say that he won’t be receiving an invitation to Apple CEO Tim Cook’s house for dinner anytime soon.
In a video posted on his Instagram account, Zuckerberg expressed that upon receiving the Vision Pro, he anticipated that it would outshine the Meta Quest 3, considering its $3,499 price tag, as opposed to Meta’s $499. However, after testing Vision Pro, he declared, “I believe the Quest is the superior product, without a doubt.”
While it’s not surprising to hear Zuckerberg make such claims, he does raise several valid points. For instance, he noted that while the Vision Pro boasts a high-resolution display, the Meta Quest 3 offers a broader field of view. Zuckerberg also highlighted that the Meta Quest 3 is 120 grams lighter than the Vision Pro, making it more comfortable to wear.
Overall, Zuckerberg contends that the Meta Quest 3 is “superior for the vast majority of applications” that users typically seek from these types of headsets compared to the Apple Vision Pro. He also emphasized that the Meta Quest 3 supports Xbox games as well. Notably, the Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro models all became compatible with Xbox Cloud Gaming via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate back in December, a few months before the launch of the Vision Pro.
While it’s not unexpected for Zuckerberg to promote the Meta Quest 3 over the Apple Vision Pro, it’s crucial to recognize that virtual reality and mixed reality devices remain a niche market and have yet to achieve widespread adoption like other consumer electronics, despite significant efforts by industry heavyweights. The ultimate winner in this competition is still uncertain, and it may be some time before we see a clear leader emerge in this space.
