Indonesia Subianto claims victory in presidential elections
Defense Minister Subianto declares victory in Indonesia’s presidential election, positioning himself as the successor to incumbent Joko Widodo, despite opposition yet to concede
Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto declared victory in Indonesia’s presidential election on Wednesday, citing unofficial tallies and framing it as a triumph for all Indonesians.
Despite lacking an official declaration from electoral authorities and with his opponents yet to concede, Subianto has maintained a significant lead in early, unofficial counts in the three-way race to govern the world’s third-largest democracy.
According to initial “quick count” tallies conducted by Indonesian polling agencies, Subianto secured between 57% and 59% of the votes, with over 80% of polling station results accounted for in the samples.
The 72-year-old candidate’s association with Indonesia’s authoritarian past, having served as a special forces commander during a period marked by allegations of torture and disappearances, remains contentious, although Subianto denies any wrongdoing.
Subianto presented himself as a successor to the popular incumbent President Joko Widodo. Subianto also has selected Widodo’s son as his vice-presidential running mate, indicating a strategic move to align himself with Widodo’s popularity and possibly garner support from Widodo’s supporters.
