French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne vows to unveil a “new political agenda” amid criticism of colonialist perceptions toward Morocco

French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne aims to rebuild the strained relationship with Morocco, one of its former colonies in Africa.

In a speech at the National Assembly, Sejourne emphasized their desire to revitalize the strained relations between Rabat and Paris.

Sejourne said that France, accused of adopting a colonialist and patronizing approach toward Morocco, will establish a “new political agenda” and seek to establish a dialogue with Moroccan officials based on “respect and transparency.”

What happened?

The earthquake in Morocco on Sept. 8, 2023, exacerbated tensions between Paris and Rabat.

France offered to send search and rescue teams after the earthquake, which claimed thousands of lives, but the Rabat administration rejected aid offers from France, Qatar, the U.K., the United Arab Emirates and Spain.

In January 2023, a resolution was adopted in the European Parliament, influenced by France, urging Moroccan authorities to respect freedom of expression and media freedom and ensure fair trials for detained journalists. The resolution also raised concerns about allegations that Moroccan officials may have offered bribes to European parliamentarians.
