Bosnian Serb leader Dodik claims Serbia’s right over RS, cites Trump’s Greenland remarks
Milorad Dodik, President of the Republika Srpska (RS), one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s two entities, pointed to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s comments about Greenland to assert Serbia’s right over RS.
In an interview with Russia Today’s (RT) Balkans channel, Dodik, a proponent of RS’s separation from Bosnia and Herzegovina, argued that borders are no longer “sacred” as they once were.
‘Nonsensical Bosnia and Herzegovina’
“Why did you include RS in something as nonsensical as Bosnia and Herzegovina?” Dodik asked. “If the U.S. has a right over Greenland, Serbia should have the same right over RS, and we can reunite with Serbia.”
Continuing his separatist rhetoric, Dodik also contended that Russia has a right over Ukraine and claimed that Europe is weakening and lacks leadership.
Under the Dayton Agreement, which ended the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the country is divided into two entities: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH), home to a majority of Croats and Bosniaks, and the RS entity, which has a Serb majority. The Brcko District holds a special status.
Trump’s statements on Greenland
Donald Trump, preparing to take office as U.S. President, reiterated his comments on Greenland in a Dec. 23, 2024, post on Truth Social. Trump argued that U.S. ownership and control over the island is an absolute necessity, sparking backlash, particularly from Greenland officials.
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Bourup Egede, responded in a written statement, declaring, “Greenland belongs to the Greenlandic people. We are not for sale, and we will never be for sale. We will not lose our long-standing fight for freedom.”
