Türkiye’s national public broadcaster, TRT, is set to open an office in Damascus, Syria, marking its 19th international bureau.

The initiative to establish the bureau came under the directive of TRT General Manager Mehmet Zahid Sobaci. Discussions have been held with Syria’s post-Assad interim administration’s Information Ministry to finalize accreditation and official procedures.

Once necessary permits are obtained, TRT will begin operations, providing on-the-ground coverage of events in Damascus to global audiences.

Türkiye, which reopened its embassy in Damascus last month after a long closure due to the Syrian civil war, is also scheduled to reopen its consulate in Aleppo next Monday.

Syria’s longtime leader Bashar Assad fled to Russia after anti-regime forces took control of Damascus on Dec. 8, bringing an end to the Baath Party regime, which had been in power since 1963.
