One person was killed and five others injured in a subway shooting involving two rival gang members in New York City

A 16-year-old male was apprehended on Thursday in relation to a shooting incident at a Bronx subway station earlier this week that resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to five others.

The incident occurred on Monday at approximately 4:30 pm at the Mount Eden train station in the Bronx, where six individuals, mostly bystanders, sustained gunshot wounds.

The occurrence is believed to have stemmed from a confrontation between two factions, leading to three teenagers discharging firearms, firing at least 19 rounds in total, both within the train carriage and on the station platform.

As the shooting persisted, passengers hurriedly evacuated the train.

Law enforcement had been in pursuit of the teenager, and his involvement in the shooting is currently under investigation.

He was apprehended by officers who were positioned outside his residence on West 172nd Street in the Bronx as he exited the premises.

Obed Beltran-Sanchez, aged 35, tragically lost his life after being struck in the chest, as confirmed by the authorities. Hailing from Mexico, he made the journey across the Canadian border in pursuit of employment opportunities in the construction sector.

“He passed away almost instantaneously, extinguishing a life filled with aspirations, a person who was determined to make a significant contribution to his family,” Consul General of Mexico in New York Jorge Islas said.

Beltran-Sanchez leaves behind a wife and two young daughters as his surviving family members.

Among the wounded are a teenage girl aged 14, a male youth, a 28-year-old man, a 29-year-old woman and a septuagenarian.

The 16-year-old had a prior arrest record for an attempted robbery in the Bronx in April 2023.
