Bangladesh repatriates 330 Myanmar nationals, including security personnel and civilians amid border clashes

On Thursday, Bangladesh completed the repatriation of 330 Myanmar nationals who had fled to the country to seek refuge amid clashes between rebel factions and Myanmar’s military along the border.

Among those repatriated were 302 Border Guard Police personnel, along with four family members, two army personnel, 18 immigration officials and four civilians.

The repatriation process commenced with 165 individuals departing from the Inani jetty on the Bangladeshi ship Karnafuli at noon. Subsequently, the remaining individuals followed suit in the afternoon after the Karnafuli returned for a second trip, according to a Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) official.

The repatriation efforts were coordinated by senior officials from both countries, including the director general of BGB and Myanmar’s ambassador to Bangladesh, with appropriate security measures implemented throughout the process.

What are people fleeing Myanmar?

People are fleeing Myanmar for various reasons, including political instability, ethnic and religious persecution, human rights abuses, economic hardship, and conflict.

Myanmar has experienced decades of armed conflict between the military and various ethnic armed groups seeking greater autonomy or independence. The ongoing conflicts have displaced millions of people internally and led to cross-border migration as people flee violence and insecurity.
