Parliamentary cats: Unofficial members of Türkiye’s Grand National Assembly

At the Turkish Parliament complex, feline residents have become familiar faces, making their presence known even in the lawmakers’ working spaces.
From lounging in VIP boxes to strolling among the parliamentarians, these charming cats have become integral to the daily atmosphere of the assembly.
Special status for cats
Thanks to special instructions from TBMM President Numan Kurtulmus, these cats roam the campus at their leisure. They are cared for by a team organized by the TBMM Support Services Directorate, who feed them and ensure their comfort.
When the cats wish to step outside, doors are opened by staff, and their health is closely monitored by veterinarians from Ankara University.

Famous calico cat of opposition lounge
According to information in Hurriyet’s news report, among the assembly’s most famous feline residents is a Calico cat, known for frequenting the opposition lounge.
With her distinctive orange, black, and white coat, this playful companion has been spotted lounging on a chair in the lounge, where Chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Devlet Bahceli often takes breaks between General Assembly sessions.
The cat also finds rest in the hallways leading to the room where President Tayyip Erdogan holds his group meetings. Despite the surrounding bustle, the catwalks confidently across the assembly’s turquoise carpet.

One of the cat’s most beloved parliamentarians is the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul MP Nimet Ozdemir, who often calls her over. The cat immediately approaches, jumps into Ozdemir’s lap, and enjoys a few moments of affection. CHP Ordu MP Seyit Torun humorously remarks: “She knows exactly who to go to.” While enjoying Ozdemir’s affection, the cat is also treated to milk from Ozdemir’s bag.
Striped cat of honor gate
Another notable feline is the striped cat, who is a frequent visitor to the TBMM’s Honor Hall. This beloved cat can often be seen strolling across the turquoise carpet of the hall, which regularly hosts important exhibitions.
The cat has even taken on the important duty of guarding the Honor Gate; the entrance used by the TBMM President when heading into the General Assembly hall.

Other feline residents
The complex is also home to several other affectionate cats, such as a tabby waiting by the press corridor doors and another striped cat who taps on the door of the library.
In addition to the main building, the assembly’s backstage gardens provide a cozy home for these cats, who live harmoniously with the local squirrels.
These parliamentary cats are not just a source of amusement for those who work in the complex; they have become cherished members of the team, contributing to the unique atmosphere of the Turkish Parliament.
