Baby gorilla rescued at Istanbul Airport named ‘Zeytin’ in heartwarming story
A baby gorilla rescued at Istanbul Airport has been named “Zeytin” (“Olive” in English) through a social media campaign by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The young primate is currently undergoing rehabilitation in a specially designed enclosure at a zoo in Polonezkoy, Türkiye.
Rescued from dire conditions
Customs enforcement teams at Istanbul Airport intercepted the gorilla on December 22, hidden in a cage within a small box on a flight from Nigeria to Bangkok. The young “gorilla gorilla,” classified as critically endangered, was found in distressing conditions.
Since its rescue, Zeytin has been kept under close supervision in a glass enclosure at the zoo. Entry into the room is only allowed after strict disinfection protocols and with masks to ensure the gorilla’s health and safety.
From timid to playful
Initially shy and withdrawn, Zeytin has since transformed into a lively and playful animal. The baby gorilla spends her days with blankets, plush toys, and an abacus, delighting caregivers and visitors with her antics. Clapping her hands and beating her chest have become her signature moves, endearing her to all who meet her.
Fahrettin Ulu, Regional Director of Nature Conservation and National Parks (DKMP), emphasized the significance of wildlife conservation. “One of our primary responsibilities is to protect and develop wildlife,” he said, highlighting that in 2024 alone, nearly 10,000 injured animals in Istanbul were rescued and rehabilitated.
Thriving under care
When Zeytin was rescued, she weighed 9.4 kilograms and measured 62 centimeters in height. Now, she weighs 10.4 kilograms and stands at 65.5 centimeters, reflecting the excellent care provided.
“The improvement in her health and behavior shows how well she is adapting to her new environment,” Ulu remarked. “While her rehabilitation is progressing smoothly, we hope to see her return to her natural habitat in Africa’s rainforests.”
Plans for repatriation
Discussions are underway with international organizations, including the CITES Secretariat, to facilitate Zeytin’s safe return to her homeland. “Our ultimate goal is for her to thrive in a secure environment in the wild,” Ulu added, noting that further updates will be shared with the public as negotiations continue.
Gorilla’s naming Zeytin: Social media sensation
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry engaged the public in naming the baby gorilla through a social media campaign. Thousands of suggestions poured in, with “Zeytin” (“Olive” in English) ultimately chosen.
“The name Zeytin has now become synonymous with this young gorilla who has captured the hearts of 85 million people,” Ulu said, thanking citizens for their overwhelming interest and support.
A bond with her caretakers
Veterinarian Gulfem Esmen, who oversees Zeytin’s care, shared insights into the gorilla’s daily routine. “She starts her day with milk, followed by fruits, vegetables, and nuts. She spends the rest of her time playing with toys,” Esmen explained.
The gorilla’s playful behavior includes wrestling with caretakers, whom she treats as family. “When she first arrived, she was very timid and stayed in one spot. Now, she’s confident and curious, even playing games on her own,” Esmen said. “We’re delighted with her progress.”
As Zeytin continues to thrive, she stands as a symbol of hope and a reminder of the critical importance of wildlife conservation.
