A head-on collision between two trams in Strasbourg, France, has left at least 30 people injured, with some in serious condition. The crash occurred after one of the trams reportedly switched tracks and collided with a stationary tram at Strasbourg station.

According to French publication Actu17, 5 people are in critical condition.

Footage shared on social media shows passengers frantically breaking train doors to help those trapped inside.

A large security perimeter was established at the station, with numerous ambulances on-site.

Paramedics and firefighters were seen loading injured individuals onto stretchers. Meanwhile, Strasbourg’s Mayor Jeanne Barseghian and other officials rushed to the scene.

One of the trams appears to have derailed as a result of the impact.

Meanwhile, railway traffic has been halted, and an investigation has been launched to determine whether a signaling error or technical malfunction caused the accident.

Concerns over casualties remain as emergency crews work at the scene.

France’s one of the busiest stations

The accident occurred in one of France’s busiest train stations outside Paris. Strasbourg, located in the historic Alsace region, is the official seat of the European Parliament.

In 1994, Strasbourg became the first major French city to reintroduce trams after the service was shut down in 1960. Since then, there had been no major accidents.
