Donald Trump says meeting with Putin is in the works
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced Thursday that plans are underway for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“He [Putin] wants to meet, and we’re setting it up,” Trump said to reporters during an event with Republican governors at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
Trump did not share specific details about the proposed meeting but noted that Putin had publicly expressed interest in holding talks. “President Putin wants to meet. He said that even publicly, and we have to get that war over. That’s a bloody mess,” Trump stated, referencing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The potential meeting could mark an early step in Trump’s approach to U.S.-Russia relations, which have been strained in recent years over issues ranging from Ukraine to alleged election interference.
On relations with China
Trump also commented on communications with Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating that there has been “a lot of” interaction between the two leaders.
“We have a lot of meetings set up with a lot of people. Some have come, but I’d rather wait till after the 20th,” Trump said, referring to his inauguration date, Jan. 20.
The remarks suggest Trump’s incoming administration is actively working to define its foreign policy priorities, with Russia and China at the forefront of the agenda.
