Turkish Airlines prepares for civil flights to Damascus

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced Thursday that Türkiye is planning to start flights to Damascus in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the Director General of Syrian Civil Aviation Eshlad Slaydi commented “Türkiye-Syria flights are scheduled to start within 1 week,” on Tuesday.

The Damascus International Airport ceased operations on Dec. 8 following the collapse of the Assad regime. Domestic flights in Syria had resumed on Dec. 18 with a Damascus-Aleppo flight.

Meanwhile, the first international flights to and from Damascus took place on Jan. 7. The outgoing flight departed for Sharjah, UAE, while the incoming flight arrived from Doha, Qatar.

Passengers arriving from Doha from Damascus were seen carrying the new free Syrian flags and chanting revolutionary songs. Many could not hold back their tears.

Türkiye’s flag carrier Turkish Airlines is now anticipated to make flights to Damascus in the upcoming days. European countries are anticipated to follow suit.
