Meta acknowledges that the closure of the Irish Basketball Federation’s Instagram account was accidental

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, claimed Monday that the closure of the Instagram account belonging to the Irish Basketball Federation was an “accidental” occurrence.

The incident gained attention when Irish women’s basketball players refrained from shaking hands with their Israeli counterparts, who had accused them of being “antisemitic” in a post on the official website of the Israel Basketball Federation before their match on Feb. 9.

The Irish Basketball Federation released a statement revealing that Meta informed them about the accidental closure of their Instagram account on Feb. 17, and it was reopened after 5 p.m. local time the following day.

According to the statement, Meta attributed the closure to a mistake and assured the federation that the issue had been resolved.
