Russia refutes US claims about intentions to deploy nuclear weapons in outer space

President Vladimir Putin expressed Russia’s firm opposition to the placement of nuclear weapons in space during his recent statement. Additionally, his Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu outright dismissed assertions made by the U.S. regarding Russia’s alleged development of a nuclear capacity for space operations.
A reliable insider informed Reuters that the U.S. suspects Russia of creating a space-based anti-satellite nuclear armament capable of disrupting various systems, from military communications to app-based transportation services.
Putin emphasized Russia’s enduring stance against the deployment of nuclear arms in space, underscoring the importance of adhering to existing agreements and proposing enhanced collaborative efforts in this domain. He highlighted that Russia’s space activities align with global norms and are comparable to those of other nations, including the U.S.
The U.S. government’s concern over Moscow’s purported development of a space-centric anti-satellite nuclear weapon was evident in a recent statement from a White House representative, who suggested that such a system would violate the Outer Space Treaty of 1967.
Contrary to the U.S. allegations, Shoigu refuted the existence of any plans for space-based nuclear weaponry, asserting that the U.S. is aware of this fact. He criticized the White House for allegedly leveraging these claims to secure additional funding for Ukraine and to prompt discussions on strategic stability with Russia.
In light of the ongoing tensions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Putin emphasized the importance of understanding the West’s intentions amid discussions on strategic stability. While open to dialogues at the defense and foreign ministry levels with the U.S., he cautioned against unilateral tactics aimed at gaining strategic advantages over Russia.
