Germany sees a sharp rise in attacks on asylum-seekers and refugee centers in 2023, with figures nearly doubling from the previous year, according to Interior Ministry data

Figures released on Wednesday reveal a nearly doubled number of attacks on asylum-seekers and refugee centers in Germany in 2023 compared to the previous year.

According to official data from the Interior Ministry, German police documented 2,378 attacks on refugees last year, a significant increase from the 1,248 attacks recorded in 2022. These attacks resulted in at least 219 individuals being injured, with the majority attributed to right-wing extremists.

Authorities also responded to and investigated 180 attacks on refugee shelters, marking the highest figure since 2017. In comparison, 70 attacks were reported in 2022.

The Interior Ministry disclosed these latest statistics in response to a parliamentary inquiry from the Left Party, as reported by the daily Neue Osnabrucker Zeitung.

In recent years, Germany has faced a rise in xenophobia and anti-migrant sentiments, largely fueled by the propaganda of neo-Nazi groups and the far-right Alternative for Germany party.

In 2022, Germany welcomed over 1.2 million refugees, primarily Ukrainians fleeing the ongoing war in their country. During the peak of the refugee crisis in 2015, Germany received more than 1 million refugees, many of whom were Syrians escaping the civil war.
