Greece, which has persistently sought international recognition for its claim of a 12-mile continental shelf in the Aegean Sea, encountered an unforeseen situation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Attempting to conduct operations illegally in Türkiye’s Maritime Jurisdiction Area alongside Italy, Greece was compelled to seek Ankara’s permission upon encountering the Turkish navy.

Athens, which does not recognize Türkiye’s maritime jurisdiction and acts in violation of international laws in the Aegean Sea, was forced to recognize Türkiye’s maritime jurisdiction with the permission granted.

Regarding the Italian-flagged ship, Ministry of National Defense sources said, “On July 22, the ship in question was warned not to enter our maritime jurisdiction and was prevented by our ships. Later, as a result of the coordination, it was given ‘permission’ to carry out work at the specified coordinates, and it completed its activity and left our continental shelf under the escort of the ships of our Naval Forces.”
